Alice in Wonderland by Knot Sew Normal
“Mad Hatter: “Why is a raven like a writing-desk?”
“Have you guessed the riddle yet?” the Hatter said, turning to Alice again.
“No, I give it up,” Alice replied: “What’s the answer?”
“I haven’t the slightest idea,” said the Hatter”
Hi Everyone! Jonie here, from Knot Sew Normal. I am so excited to be competing in this month’s Crafting Con. When I saw the theme for April was Disney, I knew I had to compete. You see, I might be just a tad bit obsessed with Disney. Last fall I had a Crafting Con tutorial on making a Tinkerbell dress. We also had a trip to Disney last fall where I made a good portion of our clothes, you can read that here.
“Well that was the silliest tea party I ever went to! I am never going back there again!”
So I LOVE Disney, but I REALLY, REALLY love Alice In Wonderland. I love the book, I love the cartoon, I love the Live Action version. I just LOVE Wonderland. See that Cheshire cat in the photos? That doesn’t belong to one of my kids, that is my Cheshire cat. I knew as soon as sign-ups went up that I wanted to do something Alice inspired, but we have an Alice dress, so I wanted to focus on some of the other characters. (Make sure to keep a sharp eye out and you may see some cameos by some other famous Disney characters.)
Originally I planned on making Miss G something Cheshire inspired and making Mr T the Mad Hatter, then Miss G requested Mad Hatter. So Miss G and I sat down and planned out her Hatter look. She requested a hood, and pockets on the shirt. I decided to go with the Peek-a-Boo Patterns Hangout Hoodie. I altered the pattern so the placket would completely button up. I designed the Hatter applique to go on the back of the shirt and you can get a free download of that over on Knot Sew Normal, HERE. I also dida reverse applique on the hood for the famous 10/6. For the pants I knew I wanted to go with the cropped sweat pants that are in style right now. It was perfect timing when Melly Sews put out her free pattern for Slim Sweats. I shortened the pants to make them a cropped pants. Miss G loves these pants. She said they were very “snuggly”
For Mr. T’s look I once again went with the Peek-a-Boo pattern Grandslam raglan. I have sewn this shirt so many times, I think my machine could sew it all by itself. I added a hand drafted bow tie applique to the front of the shirt. On the back I quickly sketched out a pocket watch on some freezer paper and stenciled it on the back of the shirt along with the words, “I’m Late”. I really wanted the pocket watch to have a hand illustrated feel to it. “Watch me hop mommy. All rabbits must hop.”
“Little Alice fell
bumped her head
and bruised her soul”
I am quiet sure if the White Rabbit that Alice followed were as cute as this one. I would have been just like her and followed him right down that rabbit hole.
“Yes, that’s it! Said the Hatter with a sigh, it’s always tea time.”
“You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.”
“One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked. ‘Where do you want to go?’ was his response. ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it doesn’t matter.”
