Harry and Luna by The Fairy Dust Bin

Hi! I’m Kate, and I occasionally blog over at The Fairy Dust Bin. If you’ve been following Crafting Con, you’ve probably seen me before, and it’s always good to be back. It’s been a busy summer, but I’m excited to get to bring in the school year and send my kids back to Hogwarts! I mean, elementary school. They aren’t old enough for Hogwarts yet. I’m sure their letters will come in time. For now, they’ll have to settle for taking inspiration from characters from the books and movies.

Cy’s favorite character in Harry Potter is Harry himself. He wants to be a Gryffindor (but shh, he’s really a Hufflepuff like me, he took the Pottermore sorting quiz!) and follow in the heroes’ footsteps. Harry’s style is pretty basic – jeans, tees, hoodies, the occasional plaid shirt when he isn’t wearing his school uniform. He wanted something with the Gryffindor colors, so I hacked the Patterns for Pirates Lumberjack Shirt into a pull on hoodie. I used the back yoke to add colorblocking and pull in more of the gold. The cuffs are yellow and lined with red, but he liked them rolled up so just a hint of the gold peeks out.

These are now his favorite pants – he doesn’t usually even like jeans, but I made the Cpt Comfort Jeans also from Patterns for Pirates, and he has decided they are the perfect pants. They still have great jeans details, but no buttons or zippers – a faux fly and a soft knit waistband make these perfect for my kid who usually prefers pull on and go athletic pants.

This is a great outfit for meeting in the woods and petting the Thestrals.

Ellie always reminds me of Luna Lovegood – smart but appearing to have her head off in another land somewhere. I was inspired by Luna’s outfit at the beginning of the Half Blood Prince, on the Hogwarts train handing out copies of the Quibbler. She didn’t want or need a coat, so I made a New Horizons Lisse Hoodie from pink french terry from Raspberry Creek Fabric, soft and cozy for heading into fall. Her skirt is just a simple elastic waist skirt, made from fabric that seemed appropriately Luna-esque. The tights I bought white and dyed with royal blue Rit Dye.

They’re off to practice spells with Dumbledore’s Army! Thanks for having me back! Don’t forget to check out the rest of the Harry Potter posts this month.
