My Neighbor Totoro Tunic Set by Rae Gun Ramblings
Hi all, I’m Marissa from Rae Gun Ramblings and this little lady, my niece, is a CRAZY huge Totoro fan. A few years back she had a Totoro Mermaid Birthday party and then she wanted to be Totoro for Halloween. And you’d have thought that the obsession would have died down but it has not. So being the great Auntie and fandom lover that I am, I was happy to indulge her own personal fandom again!
I used The Norah Tunic pattern from Welcome to the Mouse House as the base of L’s top. But of course adorned with one of L’s favorite characters from My Neighbor Totoro: Catbus.
I liked how the white bow detail fits with the white clouds that I made out of iron-on vinyl one of my favorite craft tricks.
For the leggins I used Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop’s Lollipop leggins pattern again with lots of Totoro applique that I hand made myself. If you haven’t ever made your own applique it’s really fun and not too hard. I’m sharing a tutorial for how to applique today and the best part is when you make your own appliques it can be of ANYTHING. In my case they are almost always geeky things like the Totoro details on this outfit.
One thing I particularly like about the look I came up with is that it mixes both woven (non-stretchy) fabrics with knits (stretchy fabrics). When dealing with kids clothes the parts are little so it’s important to think through where the appliques will end up and I had to sew them on mid-construction for the different pieces.
I gave this to L for her birthday just a couple weeks ago and she was so excited she immediately striped down and put it on. I’d say that makes it a winner in my book. I hope you like my little Totoro inspired number!
