Steampunk with Friends Stitched Together
This is Amy again and, as I mentioned last week, I love the theme of Steampunk! I couldn’t resist sewing along this month. This outfit is also part of the Mabel Madison Duds for Dudes tour – for more info on this AHmazing fabric, hop over to Friends Stitched Together!
I got this Steampunk Fashion book last month while I was doing “research” (my favorite part of CraftingCon 😉 ) and decided to do a mix of Weird West and Diesel Punk. Since I was sewing for an almost-five-year-old, I wanted to keep things bright and fun, while adding nods to the genres.
I started with a Bradley Vest using Verhees stripe knit and added zippered welt pockets. The shirt is a Timmy Top in star Stenzo and the pants are modified Walker Jeans upcycled from an old pair of mine.
I found this bolt file from Urban Threads for the back pockets and used silver thread to really make them pop. I had some leather scraps and made a completely useless strap for the back 😉
John’s favorite part is his “pocket watch”. No way was I getting a kid a real pocket watch – I found a clear locket at Joann’s and filled it with a mix of little gears and bright beads.
For the button tabs on the sleeve, I used the ends of one of the zippers from the pants that I had to trim (I weirdly have a hard time throwing those away…) and a little metal button to tack it in place.
I modified the Walker Jeans by piecing the front leg lengthwise and adding horizontal zipper pockets, using these jeans as a reference.
The last detail was a little cravat/tie thingie. I got a selection of silk ties from Goodwill to make tie dyed eggs for Easter and used some of the scraps for that. He was not a big fan, but fortunately was a good sport about wearing it for a few minutes.
